How to Incorporate Business Travel When You're a Single Mom

Airplanes move fast!

So do single Moms that are juggling business travel with family responsibilities .

Over the years, I've developed strategies and tactics to ensure that my time away doesn't hurt my family or personal life.

Here are some tips and insights for working moms in similar situations:

Plan Ahead: The key to successful business travel as a working mom is meticulous planning. I start by mapping out my travel schedule well in advance, taking into account my daughters' school calendars, extracurricular activities, and any family events.

Communicate with Your Team: Transparency is crucial when you're a business owner with a team. I make sure to communicate my travel plans with my employees as soon as they're confirmed, delegating tasks and responsibilities accordingly. This ensures that everyone is on the same page and that operations run smoothly in my absence. I trust my team and want to be able to support them even when I am away.

Utilize Technology: Technology has been a lifesaver for me when it comes to staying connected with my family while I'm away. I schedule regular video calls with my daughters and make use of messaging apps to stay in touch throughout the day. This helps me maintain a sense of closeness even when I'm miles away.

Delegate Responsibilities: Running a business and managing a household can be overwhelming, especially as a single parent. That's why I've learned the importance of delegation. Whether it's assigning tasks to my team at work or enlisting the help of family (Thanks Mom!) and friends at home, delegating responsibilities lightens the load and ensures that nothing falls through the cracks.

Maximize Efficiency: When I'm on the road, every minute counts. I've learned to maximize efficiency by streamlining my travel itinerary and making the most of downtime. Whether it's catching up on emails during flights or scheduling meetings back-to-back, I make sure to use my time wisely to minimize time away from my family.

Prioritize Self-Care: It’s easy to neglect self-care amidst the hustle and bustle of daily life. However, I've come to realize that prioritizing my own well-being is essential for both my personal and professional success. Whether it's fitting in a workout session or treating myself to a relaxing spa treatment during a business trip, I make self-care a non-negotiable part of my routine.

Stay Flexible: Despite all the planning and preparation, unexpected challenges can still arise when you're balancing work and family life. That's why it's essential to stay flexible and adaptable in the face of change. Whether it's a last-minute schedule change or a delayed flight, I approach each situation with a positive mindset and a willingness to adjust my plans accordingly.

While it's not easy, finding the right balance is definitely doable.  Do you have any travel hacks to share?
